Medicine Hat, AB, Canada on our Cross Canada RV Trip

Medicine Hat, is a city of 61,000 people in south eastern Alberta, Canada. It is the sunniest city in Canada with mild winters and the hub city with connections to the Canadian Badlands and sites. We stayed at the Gas City Campground, which is city owned and is just off Hwy 1 passing thru town. It has many amenities, with a great playground that brings all the kids to play. My only complaint would be that it doesn’t have WiFi at the sites and that comes high on our list for RV travelling.

We made this stop on our Cross Canada Road trip to visit with 8 very special friends who live in this corner of the province. It was wonderful to see them and spend time with them as well as learn about Medicine Hat and its’charm.

                                                                        Saamis Tepee

The Saamis Tepee is the tallest tepee in the world. It was originally built for the 1988 Olympics in Calgary and then was moved to Medicine Hat, AB later. It overlooks the Kin Coulee Park.

Beautiful story circles
Several noted local artists have painted the history of the local natives on large circles that are displayed inside the Tepee. Their stories are explained as well. It is a wonderful honor to their history.

Storyboards to explain the paintings

The Saamis Tepee is built entirely of steel with a concrete foundation. It stands 20 stories high and weighs almost 1,000 tons. It is said to have more engineering challenges than the Eiffel Tower, which sounds amazing, but it is very impressive when you stand in there, surrounded by the stories of history.

Large mural sits at the tepee

Pond at Medicine Hat College
Medicine Hat College is a progressive institution serving more than 2,500 full-time students. This includes a campus for the Conservatory of Music and Dance in the Cultural Centre. The Conservatory is home to various musical ensembles. The Medicine Hat College Theatre is the venue for many concerts, plays and other productions.

There are many things we didn’t see during our stay in Medicine Hat but that gives us a good reason to return and be able to visit our dear friends again. Our Cross Canada Road trip would take us years if we were to see all that Canada has to offer so we will leave Medicine Hat with many reasons to return.
